The Premier League hierarchy is urging its member clubs to reject any expansion of VAR’s authority starting next season, as reported by The Guardian. In February, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs the rules of the game, gave the green light for VAR to intervene in situations involving corner kicks and second yellow cards. However, according to sources, the Premier League has already consulted with refereeing bodies on these proposals and intends to recommend that clubs vote against them. The league insists that VAR should continue to be limited to decisions on penalties, red cards, and offsides.
Refereeing officials are concerned that introducing such changes would significantly lengthen match times in the Premier League, potentially upsetting broadcasters and adding extra pressure on match officials. The final decision will be made next month when Premier League clubs gather for their annual meeting.
