Home Weakest Teams: Tottenham Struggles Despite €803 Million Squad Value

VfL Wolfsburg is even worse. Tottenham Hotspur is fighting against relegation in the Premier League as the season ends, despite being one of the top five away teams in England’s top flight. However, their home form has been disastrous. With a squad value of €802.5 million, Spurs are the ninth most valuable club worldwide, yet their home record is among the weakest in Europe. Transfermarkt examines the worst-performing home teams, including a Bundesliga club.

The poorest home records belong to Hellas Verona and Pisa Sporting Club from Serie A. Verona averages just 0.44 points per home game, while Pisa is only slightly better at 0.56. Unlike Spurs, their home form reflects their overall league standings, as both clubs have already been relegated.

VfL Wolfsburg from the Bundesliga is next, with 0.59 points per home game and the last spot in Germany’s home table. However, thanks to a strong away record, they still have a chance to avoid the relegation playoff on the final matchday. Wolfsburg is level on points with St. Pauli and FC Heidenheim but has a better goal difference. The Lower Saxony side travels to Millerntor on Saturday, while in-form Heidenheim hosts Mainz 05.

Among the top five leagues, French side FC Metz shares the same home points average as Wolfsburg (0.59). Then come three Premier League teams: Tottenham, FC Burnley, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Burnley and Wolves both average 0.67 points at home, while Wolves have 0.72. Burnley and Wolves have already been relegated, but Spurs are still fighting for survival. With 38 points, Tottenham is two points ahead of 18th-placed West Ham United, largely thanks to their away form: fifth in the Premier League away table with 26 points and a positive goal difference, averaging 1.4 points per game.

The contrast between home and away performance is even starker for Spanish side Celta Vigo. At Balaídos, they collected 20 points from 17 home games, but on the road they earned 30 points, ranking third in the away table and fifth overall in LaLiga.

However, no team in Europe uses such a high-value squad as inefficiently as Tottenham. With a market value of €802.5 million, their poor points haul is hard to explain. Roberto De Zerbi is the third manager this season and is tasked with securing survival. The club also failed in cup competitions, being eliminated early in domestic tournaments and losing to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

Last season, Spurs fans also suffered from poor home league form, collecting 38 points at home (ranked 17th). But winning the Europa League provided consolation and entry to the Champions League. This season, the downward trend has worsened, and relegation looms. Despite this, an average of 60,000 fans attend matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. On the final matchday, they host Everton, the sixth-best away team in the league. A win could decide their top-flight status.
